Never Let a Good Disaster Go to Waste
Jim Allsopp is a 35-year skilled Health and Safety leader with degrees in Safety Engineering (BS) and Occupational Safety & Health (MS) from Murray State University. He began his career developing HAZWOPER programs at the University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus through an NIEHS grant, then spent 16 years at GE Appliances, Consumer Products, and Consumer & Industrial. His roles ranged from various appliance plant H&S and New Product Introduction Ergonomics to Dispersed Workforce leadership, ultimately serving as the Americas H&S Leader for Appliance, Lighting, and Industrial Systems manufacturing based at GE’s Corporate Headquarters in Louisville.
After GE, Jim became Brown-Forman’s Global Corporate Health & Safety Director, later expanding his responsibilities to lead Workers’ Compensation, Crisis Management, Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity. In 2024, after 15 years of service, he took early retirement and launched Resiliency Risk Management, a consulting firm focused on H&S, Risk Management, Workplace Ergonomics, Crisis Management and Business Continuity programs /simulations.
Jim serves as Executive Secretary on the Board of Bridgehaven Mental Health and volunteers with the American Heart Association. His guiding belief: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
Jim’s presentation explores three major disasters and their impact on lives, communities, standards development, business continuity, and the legal liabilities that followed. He will also share a deeply personal crisis from early 2025—an honest look at how EHS careers can take a toll on personal health (mental and physical) through stress and health denial.
